MICHAEL MIYAZAKI SHARES THOUGHTS

ON HIS CABARET CONFERENCE EXPERIENCE IN ST LOUIS

I recently had a chance to attend the St. Louis Cabaret Conference.  It featured a terrific teaching team (Lina Koutrakas, Rick Jensen, Amanda McBroome, Alex Rybeck) and had a mix of students mostly from St. Louis , but with people attending from Seattle , Chicago , Boston , Palm Springs and DC.

The 4-day conference featured a general immersion session where all the participants sang and were critiqued by the faculty, smaller sessions where groups sang with feedback from the individual teaching teams, sessions on patter and show structure, and concerts by the faculty, last year’s participants, and a final student showcase.

The ages of the participants ranged from twenty-one to seventy- two.  There were many levels of experience and knowledge represented, however there was a universal love of music and the faculty did an extraordinary job of tailoring their approach to the individual level and need of each participant.

Lina Koutrakas and Rick Jensen are planning future workshops in Santa Fe (Nov 30 – Dec 2) and Boston (Jan 4 – 6).  They’re a good initial exposure to a cabaret workshop for anyone thinking of the Yale or Perry-Mansfield programs, a good refresher for alumni of  those programs, or a great time for anyone who wants to be immersed in a performance experience with other cabaret devotees for a weekend.

One of the teaching staff of the St Louis workshop was the great Alex Rybeck – a music director who has collaborated with Broadway and Cabaret stars Ann Hampton Callaway, Liz Callaway, Faith Prince, Marni Nixon, Jason Graae, Kitty Carlisle Hart and many others.

During the St. Louis workshop Alex Rybeck became one of the most quotable coaches I’ve ever worked with.  Here are some of his pearls of wisdom:

“Focus equals sanity”

“You (the performer) are the songwriter and the lyricist – we believe that you’re making it up”

“Where’s the conflict (in the piece you’re working on)?”

“We see at the expense of what we hear”

“There can be great ferocity in a whisper.” (Quoting Sylvia Syms)

“Talent is what you can get away with”

“Any line that’s important should be sung center”

“Know ‘why am I the perfect person to sing this song.’”

“A standard is a song that a straight man in Idaho will know all the words to.”

“When you give a room permission to laugh, you give them permission to cry”

“The storyteller is always more interesting than the story”

Participants receive individualized feedback on their performance in the following areas:  connection to material, physical choices, song selection, interpretation, arrangements, audience connection and internal/external focus of song.  Other topics covered in the three days include constructing a show, working with your musical director, the importance of “the arrangement” and developing patter.

The weekend culminates on Sunday evening, Dec 2nd with a PARTICIPANT SHOWCASE at Geist Cabaret at Pranzo, 540 Montezuma in the Sanbusco Market Center , Santa Fe , NM .  The show is open to the public. It is our policy to include, to the best of our ability, all cabaret related notices of our paid up members. Submission, however, does not guarantee inclusion in the newsletter. Although we always do the best we can to include the cabaret-related notices of paid-up members, realities such as mis-delivered email or the timing of submissions may affect what gets published in a particular edition. Your music-related submissions must be made to:

dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com

We reserve the right to edit, and determine the inclusion of, all submissions. It is the responsibility of the person submitting the information to proof read the submission for spelling and correct logistical information.

The newsletter update goes out the first of each month, with submissions due by the 25th of the previous month.  Please send your submissions (to dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com)

Inclusion in the newsletter does not signify a recommendation or endorsement

by the Network. We do not post events previous to the date of the newsletter.

We do not post notices for events we know to be sold out. If you have any questions about our listing policy, please contact us at dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com or through our website www.dccabaretnetwork.org
