AUDITION ANNOUNCEMENT

SIXTH ANNUAL, CABARET CONFERENCE AT YALE UNIVERSITY,

JULY 25 – AUGUST 3, 2008

Erv Raible, Executive Director/Artistic Director, takes great pride in announcing the Sixth Annual Cabaret Conference at Yale University.  The Cabaret Conference at Yale University is being developed in conjunction with the Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theater.  Several conference sessions will be held in the facilities of the Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theater, including the recently opened New Theater.

The Sixth Annual Cabaret Conference At Yale University will be held July 25 - August 3, 2008, and is an internationally focused, nine-day teaching program that offers an intensive look at the art of cabaret performance technique, and trains professionals for the live entertainment industry. The Great American Songbook will be addressed and promoted in its entirety, from its origins in the late 19th century through the classic pop standards of the 1930s and 40s to today’s contemporary cabaret, musical theater, jazz, pop and classical music.

Our students have come from across the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, Greece, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

The award-winning faculty, and renowned consultants, will guide thirty-six students in a collaborative process of critical refining and honing.  The conference will feature classes and lectures covering cabaret performance technique, acting for singers, lyric interpretation, focus and concentration, act structure, act writing, material research, and comedic development, to musical director and director relations, arranging, orchestration, composer/lyricist relations, and image consultation.  Examine the final stages of act presentation through club relations, marketing, press and public relations, to the technical language of light and sound, representation, booking, management and personal networking; with an emphasis on integration into the international live entertainment community.

Public performances allow the students to observe first-hand the performance techniques of professionals in the industry, while continuing to study those of their peers on a daily performance basis.  At the Cabaret Conference Curtain Call the students will perform, demonstrating what they have accomplished in their nine days at the Cabaret Conference at Yale University.

Our prestigious 2008 faculty currently includes: Tovah Feldshuh, Jason Graae, Carol Hall, George Hall, Laurel Massé, Sally Mayes, Sharon McNight, Erv Raible, Fred Voelpel, and Julie Wilson; piano faculty includes Ron Abel, Tex Arnold, Michael Orland, Alex Rybeck and Paul Trueblood.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE! WILL PRESENTS: “THE RHYTHM ROAD: AMERICAN MUSIC ABROAD”

For a third year, National Geographic Live! will present five evenings of free concerts featuring musicians from “The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad” program. This program, co-developed by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, gives talented jazz and urban musicians from around the country the chance to perform for international audiences. “The Rhythm Road” performance series at National Geographic is presented with generous support from its media sponsor, radio station WPFW, at 89.3 FM in Washington.

The goal of Rhythm Road is to foster a cultural exchange in regions of the world that may have limited access to American music and culture. Each Thursday evening concert will feature performances from two groups whose work highlights America’s unique contribution to the world of music. Many of the groups performing at National Geographic are making their last stop in the United States before their overseas tours begin, while others are just returning.

This year’s line-up includes:

Jan. 17— The Kelley Johnson Quartet (6 p.m.) reworks selections from the Great American Songbook and other jazz favorites in a creative and energetic way; Universes (7:15 p.m.) is an ensemble company of writers and performers who fuse poetry, theater, jazz and other disciplines to create challenging theatrical works.

Jan. 24—The Ryan Cohan Quartet (6 p.m.) performs music deeply rooted in jazz and blues traditions that still crosses into new musical territories; Exegesis (7:15 p.m.) seeks to bridge the gap between modern music technology and improvisation, using live samplers and interactive music software to create the illusion of a much larger group. A reception will follow the concert.

March 27—The Maya Azucena Band (6 p.m.) presents music influenced by artists ranging from Earth, Wind & Fire to Ella Fitzgerald, bridging the genres of soul, hip-hop, world and funk music; Alvin Atkinson and the Sound Merchants (7:15 p.m.) integrate heavy jazz and blues with rhythms and melodies from all around the world.

April 17—Devin Phillips & New Orleans Straight Ahead (6 p.m.) play modern jazz spiced with the rich musical traditions of New Orleans, celebrating the unique musical heritage of the birthplace of jazz; The Dana Leong Band (7:15 p.m.) combines live grooves, electronically charged tracks, rhyme and reason into a unique fusion of modern beats.

May 1—Chris Byars Quartet (6 p.m.) has been performing music based on a lifelong study of great jazz masters for more than two decades; AFAR (7:15 p.m.) is an instrumental hip-hop band with jazz, R&B and gospel influences.

All concerts in “The Rhythm Road” series are free; no reservations or tickets are required. Performances will take place in Gilbert H. Grosvenor Auditorium, 1600 M Street N.W., Washington. For more information, please contact the National Geographic ticket office at (202) 857-7700, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or visit www.nglive.org.

POLICY REGARDING SUMBISSION OF NOTICES

The DC Cabaret Network's bi-monthly newsletter moved to a once-a-month schedule in May 2007. The newsletter will be sent out on the 1st of each month.  The deadline for all submissions will be the 25th of the prior month - no exceptions.  If you miss the deadline, your entry will have to wait until the following month for inclusion. Thanks to all of you for your support and understanding.  Please send your info to DCCabaretNetwork@hotmail.com

POLICIES REGARDING INCLUSION OF NOTICES

The DC Cabaret Network is a small organization run on a 100% volunteer basis.  We do the best we can with the resources and information we have. It is our policy to include, to the best of our ability, all cabaret related notices of our paid up members. Submission, however, does not guarantee inclusion in the newsletter. Although we always do the best we can to include the cabaret-related notices of paid-up members, realities such as mis-delivered email or the timing of submissions may affect what gets published in a particular edition. Your music-related submissions must be made to:

dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com

We reserve the right to edit, and determine the inclusion of, all submissions. It is the responsibility of the person submitting the information to proof read the submission for spelling and correct logistical information.

We will continue to list, free of charge, upcoming events by out-of-town performers.

The newsletter update goes out the first of each month, with submissions due by the 25th of the previous month.  Please send your submissions (to dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com)

Inclusion in the newsletter does not signify a recommendation or endorsement by the Network.

We do not post events previous to the date of the newsletter.

If you have any questions about our listing policy, please contact us at dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com or through our website www.dccabaretnetwork.org

POLICY REGARDING EDITS TO SUBMISSIONS PUBLISHED IN MULTIPLE EDITIONS OF NEWSLETTER

We gladly publish notices of paid up members in multiple editions of the newsletter. If you have a notice published in the newsletter, and the date of the event will carry the notice into subsequent editions of the newsletter, check your information frequently and verify it is correct.

We understand that sometimes plans and arrangements change. If you have a notice currently published in the newsletter, but need to update or change the information, re-submit your notice IN FULL (exactly as you’d like it to appear in the newsletter), including the changes, to dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com.  In a separate paragraph, specifically point out the changes that you made.  We will cut/paste your updated notice into the newsletter, calling attention to the changes made. If you have a notice published in the newsletter, and the date of the event will carry the notice into subsequent editions of the newsletter, and we do not receive a new/complete submission (as stated above) with changes specifically pointed out, your notice will appear exactly as before.
