NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE! PRESENTS: “THE RHYTHM ROAD: AMERICAN MUSIC ABROAD”

For a third year, National Geographic Live! will present five evenings of free concerts featuring musicians from “The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad” program. This program, co-developed by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, gives talented jazz and urban musicians from around the country the chance to perform for international audiences. “The Rhythm Road” performance series at National Geographic is presented with generous support from its media sponsor, radio station WPFW, at 89.3 FM in Washington.

The goal of Rhythm Road is to foster a cultural exchange in regions of the world that may have limited access to American music and culture. Each Thursday evening concert will feature performances from two groups whose work highlights America’s unique contribution to the world of music. Many of the groups performing at National Geographic are making their last stop in the United States before their overseas tours begin, while others are just returning.

This year’s line-up includes:

March 27—The Maya Azucena Band (6 p.m.) presents music influenced by artists ranging from Earth, Wind & Fire to Ella Fitzgerald, bridging the genres of soul, hip-hop, world and funk music; Alvin Atkinson and the Sound Merchants (7:15 p.m.) integrate heavy jazz and blues with rhythms and melodies from all around the world.

April 17—Devin Phillips & New Orleans Straight Ahead (6 p.m.) play modern jazz spiced with the rich musical traditions of New Orleans, celebrating the unique musical heritage of the birthplace of jazz; The Dana Leong Band (7:15 p.m.) combines live grooves, electronically charged tracks, rhyme and reason into a unique fusion of modern beats.

May 1—Chris Byars Quartet (6 p.m.) has been performing music based on a lifelong study of great jazz masters for more than two decades; AFAR (7:15 p.m.) is an instrumental hip-hop band with jazz, R&B and gospel influences.

All concerts in “The Rhythm Road” series are free; no reservations or tickets are required. Performances will take place in Gilbert H. Grosvenor Auditorium, 1600 M Street N.W., Washington. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

FROM LINDA RUSSELL, HER CD IS AVAILABLE

President’s Weekend has just past and many of us would have been hanging out at the Double Tree Hotel engulfed in the most fabulous sounds and rhythms of jazz.

Like you, I am really missing that festival.  I always took 1-2 weeks of vacation to volunteer and participate in the great event.  For weeks, I would be on cloud nine.

The festival did not occur this year; however you can still get a taste of those exciting moments through my DVD or CD entitled Linda Russell Live at the East Coast Jazz Festival.

Recorded at our last festival with the Fred Hughes Trio, this performance features a mix of well-loved classics and lesser-known delights including Four Women, A Time For Love, and Agua de Beber.  This jam session reflects the spontaneity and “being in the moment” feeling that the jazz experience fosters.

Watch the live DVD performance for $20

Listen to the CD performance for $15

Purchase both for $30 (that’s a $5 discount)

Shipping and handling is FREE during this introductory period (when purchased directly from me)

Send me an email, if you are interested for more information (LDRuss27@comcast.net)

Or, you can purchase the CD through CD BABY at www.cdbaby.com/lindarussell .  Go to this website to hear samples of each song.

1 I Can't Give You Anything But Love

2 Agua De Beber (Water To Drink)

3 Domain Name Blues

4 Down With Love

5 Medley: Four Woman/Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child

6 Medley: Waltz For Debby/Someday My Prince Will Come

7 Pick Yourself Up

8 A Time For Love

9 Most Gentleman Don't Like Love

In addition, check out our website at www.lindarussellsings.com. The audience at the live concert selected the domain name for the website.  It was a close race with “singlindasing.com” coming in at second place. The website is still under construction, so give me some feedback on what you would like added or modified.

SEEKING VENUE INFORMATION

Support your fellow cabaret lovers and performers! We are formulating a list of cabaret venues. If you have information about a great cabaret space (a church, restaurant, community center, theatre space, etc), let us know! If possible, please include name of site, address, phone, contact name and details of what makes it a great spot for cabaret performance. Please email

the information to membership@dccabaretnetwork.org or write to DC Cabaret Network, P.O. Box 6259, Washington, DC 20015-0259.

POLICY REGARDING SUMBISSION OF NOTICES

The DC Cabaret Network's bi-monthly newsletter moved to a once-a-month schedule in May 2007. The newsletter will be sent out on the 1st of each month.  The deadline for all submissions will be the 25th of the prior month - no exceptions.  If you miss the deadline, your entry will have to wait until the following month for inclusion. Thanks to all of you for your support and understanding.  Please send your info to DCCabaretNetwork@hotmail.com

POLICIES REGARDING INCLUSION OF NOTICES

The DC Cabaret Network is a small organization run on a 100% volunteer basis.  We do the best we can with the resources and information we have. It is our policy to include, to the best of our ability, all cabaret related notices of our paid up members. Submission, however, does not guarantee inclusion in the newsletter. Although we always do the best we can to include the cabaret-related notices of paid-up members, realities such as mis-delivered email or the timing of submissions may affect what gets published in a particular edition. Your music-related submissions must be made to:

dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com

We reserve the right to edit, and determine the inclusion of, all submissions. It is the responsibility of the person submitting the information to proof read the submission for spelling and correct logistical information.

We will continue to list, free of charge, upcoming events by out-of-town performers.

The newsletter update goes out the first of each month, with submissions due by the 25th of the previous month.  Please send your submissions (to dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com)

Inclusion in the newsletter does not signify a recommendation or endorsement by the Network.

We do not post events previous to the date of the newsletter.

If you have any questions about our listing policy, please contact us at dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com or through our website www.dccabaretnetwork.org

POLICY REGARDING EDITS TO SUBMISSIONS PUBLISHED IN MULTIPLE EDITIONS OF NEWSLETTER

We gladly publish notices of paid up members in multiple editions of the newsletter. If you have a notice published in the newsletter, and the date of the event will carry the notice into subsequent editions of the newsletter, check your information frequently and verify it is correct.

We understand that sometimes plans and arrangements change. If you have a notice currently published in the newsletter, but need to update or change the information, re-submit your notice IN FULL (exactly as you’d like it to appear in the newsletter), including the changes, to dccabaretnetwork@hotmail.com.  In a separate paragraph, specifically point out the changes that you made.  We will cut/paste your updated notice into the newsletter, calling attention to the changes made. If you have a notice published in the newsletter, and the date of the event will carry the notice into subsequent editions of the newsletter, and we do not receive a new/complete submission (as stated above) with changes specifically pointed out, your notice will appear exactly as before.
