DC CABARET NETWORK MARCH OPEN MIC: 365 DAYS/365 PLAYS BY SUZAN-LORI PARKS
A UNIQUE CREATIVE OPPORTUNITY AT THE WAREHOUSE THEATRE & CAFÉ ON MARCH 5,
2007
The DC Cabaret Network has the exceptional opportunity to participate in the
ground breaking theatre event of works by Suzan-Lori Parks who wrote
TopDog/UnderDog. Performance groups nationwide were selected to present a
week of plays (the same week of plays will be performed by different groups
all across the country) creating the largest collaboration in the history of
American theater.
The DC Cabaret Network has plays for Week 17 to perform in the DC area.
We will perform all of these short plays on March 5, 2007 for our March Open
Mic.
Here’s the concept: The Acting Company will perform the plays and some of
the performers will also sing songs related to the plays. In addition, on
the night of the Open Mic, everyone is invited to bring songs that relate to
the plays. These songs might be sung before, after, or between the plays
with the aim for the songs to support, comment, introduce, or follow up the
plays. It is important that your choices be influenced by the plays and
really connect to them.
Many thanks to everyone who responded to perform in the Acting Company! The
response has been fantastic. We have all the performers we can accept for
the Acting Company at this time.
If you are in the Acting Company, information on the rehearsal location will
be emailed to you.
If you plan to participate in the Open Mic on March 5, please come prepared
with a song that you feel relates directly to one of the plays. To read the

Because of the terrific response, we can accommodate just one song per
person.
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SIGN-UP:
Due to the nature of this project, sign-up for this Open Mic is very
important. If you would like to sing, you must arrive at the Warehouse
between 7pm and 7:15pm for sign-up. We cannot accept any songs for sign-up
after 7:30. The performance will begin at 8pm.
If you are singing, bring your music ready to sing: legible, in the correct
key, and any arrangement changes clearly and neatly marked. No
transpositions will be available.
This promises to be a very special and unique evening for all of us!
This Open Mic will take place, as usual, at Warehouse Theatre and Cafe.
Admission is $10 suggested donation for pianist. The Warehouse Theatre is
located at 1021 7th Street, NW, across from the new Convention Center.

A MUSICAL "SHOW" DOWN II: BERLIN VS. PORTER
Wednesday, February 21, 7 P.M.
Join Dwight Blocker Bowers, cultural historian at the National Museum of
American History, and singer/actress Judy Simmons for another round of the
popular musical "show" down as two composers of "the Great American
Songbook," Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, go tune to tune. It will be
"stars and swipes" as Berlin's distinctly American style challenges Porter's
worldly sophistication. Each often serving as both composer and lyricist,
Berlin and Porter remain legends of the American stage. Through live
performance (with voluntary audience participation), slides, and stories
highlighting the best and worst of Berlin and Porter, we'll have fun trying
to crown a champion. Alex Tang again provides wonderful accompaniment for
this unique evening.
Simmons, Executive Director of the DC Cabaret Network, has appeared
frequently at Signature Theatre and other DC Theatres. She was also part of
the American Popular Song series at the Smithsonian.

THE TUSCANY PROJECT: VOICE & SONG
15th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL INTENSIVE VOICE WORKSHOP IN ITALY
JUNE 25 - JULY 6, 2007

The Tuscany Project is an extraordinary, intensive workshop held each summer
in Italy at the villa Locanda del Gallo, near Perugia.
The project blends group and individual work focusing on each person's
growing edge in the areas of vocal exploration, movement, song
interpretation and performance, performing presence, and work on group and
individual songs (cabaret, musical theater, jazz and gospel).
The program is held in a beautiful 12th century restored villa, with a grand
swimming pool in the lush countryside of central Italy . Participants have
come from Australia, New Zealand, many parts of Europe, England, Bermuda,
Canada, and the USA. Many singers from the USA cabaret community have
participated.
This will be the 15th year that international participants gather to explore
their singing in more depth. The project views singing not simply as the art
of making beautiful sounds on key, but as a disciplined expression of our
deepest life forces and the discovery of our own personal power through the
artistry of the human voice. Adult singers of all levels are welcome.

FIFTH ANNUAL CABARET CONFERENCE AT YALE UNIVERSITY
JULY 27 – AUGUST 5, 2007

Erv Raible, Executive Director/Artistic Director, takes great pride in
announcing the Fourth Annual Cabaret Conference at Yale University. The
Cabaret Conference at Yale University is being developed in conjunction with
the Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theater. Several conference
sessions will be held in the facilities of the Yale School of Drama/Yale
Repertory Theater, including the recently opened New Theater.
The Fifth Annual Cabaret Conference At Yale University will be held July 27
- August 5, 2006, and is an internationally focused, nine-day teaching
program that offers an intensive look at the art of cabaret performance
technique, and trains professionals for the live entertainment industry. The
Great American Songbook will be addressed and promoted in its entirety, from
its origins in the late 19th century through the classic pop standards of
the 1930s and 40s to today’s contemporary cabaret, musical theater, jazz,
and pop music.
Our students have come from across the United States, Australia, Canada,
Germany, Greece, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
The award-winning faculty, and renowned special guests, will guide
thirty-six students in a collaborative process of critical refining and
honing. The conference will feature classes and lectures covering cabaret
performance technique, acting for singers, lyric interpretation, focus and
concentration, act
structure, act writing, material research, and comedic development, to
musical director and director relations, arranging, orchestration,

stages of act presentation through club relations, marketing, press and
public relations, to the technical language of light and sound,
representation, booking, management and personal networking; with an
emphasis on integration into the international live entertainment community.
Public performances will allow the students to observe first-hand the
performance techniques of professionals in the industry, while continuing to
study those of their peers on a daily performance basis. At the Cabaret
Conference Curtain Call the students will perform, demonstrating what they
have accomplished in their nine days at the Cabaret Conference at Yale
University.
Our prestigious 2007 faculty currently includes: Tovah Feldshuh, Jason
Graae, Carol Hall, George Hall, Lina Koutrakos, Laurel Massé, Sally Mayes,
Amanda McBroom, Sharon McNight, Erv Raible, Fred Voelpel, and Julie Wilson;
piano faculty includes Tex Arnold, Rick Jensen, Michael Orland, Alex Rybeck

The Cabaret Conference is held on the historic Yale University campus in New
Haven, Connecticut USA, renowned as one of the world’s finest educational
facilities, and for its spectacular architecture, world-class museums and
libraries.
Housing for the Cabaret Conference at Yale University is in Yale’s new Swing
Dormitory, and breakfast, lunch and dinner will be taken in the baronial
Tudor Dining Hall of Saybrook College or the Eero Sarrinen designed Morse
College dining hall.

“The Art of Vocal Performance is an intensive workshop designed for
performers who wish to explore this time-honored medium. The faculty has
been carefully assembled to reflect the best that the art form has to offer
in the areas of performance, composition, direction and musical direction. A
maximum of 16 participants will study in small group sessions that meet
twice daily. Evenings will consist of special topic presentations by our
faculty and guests, the opportunity to see Andrea Marcovicci and Shelly
Markham in concert and a visit to the renowned local hot springs, and. The
weeklong intensive will culminate in a public concert given by those
participating in the program.
Admission to the program is by audition only. Participation in a live
audition is preferred, however performers may request consideration for a
